Dr. Thomas Y. Whitley, the founding president of Columbus State University was appointed to establish Columbus College in May of 1958. Under his leadership, he successfully advocated a move from two-year, junior college status to senior college status in 1965. By his retirement in 1979, then Columbus College was awarding master’s degrees in education and business and enrollment had grown to over 4,400 students.
Dr. Whitley believed in providing quality education and made significant investments in faculty, facilities and in establishing the Columbus College Foundation that would help students with financial assistance. In his honor, the CSU Whitley Society is being formed to continue his legacy of providing financial assistance to current students and CSU alumni that are returning to further their education.
